Birth kit

You will need to have the following items at home, 

whether you plan on having a home birth or a hospital birth: 

  • Mattress cover
  • Two bin bags
  • A packed hospital bag (in case you have to give birth in the hospital) 
  • A maternity kit. You can request a free maternity kit from your health insurance company when you are about 20 weeks pregnant
  • Bed blocks to raise your bed to at least 75-80 cm (for a home birth) You can order free maternity supplies from Medipoint, which will be covered by your health insurance.

For the baby

You should wash new baby clothes before you use them. Your baby’s skin is very sensitive, so don’t use fabric softener. 

Layette

 

  • cot or bassinet
  • 2 fitted sheets 
  • 1 blanket (no duvet)
  • 2 top sheets
  • 8 muslin cloths
  • 6 muslin facecloths
  • 6 burp cloths
  • 2 hot water bottles (with new plugs)
  • 2 digital thermometers
  • Newborn nappies (2-5 kg)
  • 5 sets of clothes in size 50-56 (rompers, pullovers, trousers, socks, and hats)
  • car seat 
  • 2 swaddle blankets
  • changing pad
  • bath (and bath stand)
  • pushchair

Maternity kit

  • 1 large mattress cover  
  • 10 mattress pads (50×50 cm)
  • 1 cord clamp
  • 1 bottle of disinfectant alcohol, 70%
  • 1 box of gauze compresses (16/16)
  • 10 gauze compresses (10×10 cm)
  • 1 package of maternity pads
  • 1 package of menstrual pads
  • 1 bottle of disinfectant soap

If your insurance policy doesn’t cover a maternity package, you will have to purchase one yourself. We sometimes have extra supplies from other maternity kits, so feel free to ask during your appointment.

Hospital bag

  • Change of clothes for you (for at least one night) 
  • Personal care products (toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash)
  • iPad/magazines
  • Clothes for the baby (at least 2 sets)
  • Swaddle blanket
  • Pullovers
  • Trousers
  • Rompers
  • Socks
  • Hats
  • Car seat
  • Camera (and batteries)
  • Phone charger
  • Pregnancy folder and birth plan

Make sure your hospital bag is packed by week 36 of your pregnancy.
